TIRANA, June 17 – Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi described the justice reform as one of the deepest and most ambitious reforms ever undertaken by the Albanian state during a ceremony marking the conclusion of the Vetting process.
In his address, Peleshi said the event closes an important chapter in the country’s history. He argued that the reform went beyond a standard institutional change and represented an effort by the state to address a long-standing historical and cultural problem. He also said the reform aimed to confront public distrust in the justice system.
According to Peleshi, Albania took a path 10 years ago that few countries had the courage to follow. He noted that the country subjected its justice system to what he called the strongest scrutiny it had ever faced. At the same time, he described the Vetting process as a decisive step toward strengthening the rule of law and increasing public confidence in judicial institutions.
Meanwhile, the parliament speaker acknowledged that people may hold different views about the results of the process. However, he said one fact remains clear: Albania in 2026 differs from Albania in 2016. He pointed to changes in institutions, standards, and public expectations.
Later, Peleshi stressed that the impact of the Vetting institution will continue beyond the end of its mandate. He said the norms and standards established during the process will remain part of the justice system and the rule of law framework in Albania.
He also argued that a strong state requires a credible justice system, while a functioning democracy depends on institutions that inspire public trust. In addition, he linked Albania’s European future to the effective rule of law.
