TIRANA, September 2 – Prime Minister Edi Rama has expressed support for Germany amid rising tensions with Russia following Berlin’s confirmation of Russian involvement in an attempted drone attack at Leipzig airport in August.
In a post on X, Rama described the incident as an act of aggression against Germany and European security. He also backed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and said Albania stood firmly with Germany, Ukraine and its NATO allies.
German investigators found three explosive-laden drones near Leipzig/Halle Airport. Authorities believe the drones targeted Ukrainian cargo aircraft and DHL logistics infrastructure. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the findings and intelligence evidence pointed to Russian responsibility for a wider series of destabilising operations.
Meanwhile, Germany has announced diplomatic measures against Russia. The measures include closing the Russian Consulate General in Bonn from September 18 and ending the contract for the Russian House in Berlin, tightening border controls and increasing pressure on Russia’s so-called shadow fleet. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned of what she called “destructive responses” to Germany’s decisions.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also condemned Russia’s hybrid actions. Similar incidents have triggered alerts in Latvia and Estonia in recent days, while NATO fighter jets have been deployed in response.
