PM Rama discusses reforms, public expectations and protected areas law

TIRANA, July 24 – Prime Minister Edi Rama said citizens’ expectations have increased as Albania has undergone major changes. He made the remarks during a joint meeting of the government and the Socialist Party parliamentary group at the Palace of Brigades.

Rama discussed the June protests, which he referred to as the “Boulevard of Flamingos”. He said the demonstrations did not represent a rejection of previous government achievements, but reflected demands for further progress.

The prime minister said Albania had moved beyond a period of shortages. He added that citizens now judge the country based on future expectations rather than past difficulties.

Meanwhile, Rama said the protests showed that people want faster development and higher standards. He described public criticism as a challenge for institutions to address remaining issues.

Rama also highlighted reforms in justice and public services. He said the justice reform has led to investigations and court proceedings involving senior officials. He also referred to digitalisation, stating that 95% of public services are now available online.

Regarding the law on protected areas, Rama addressed the 2024 amendments. He said some protesters and members of the European Parliament used the issue for political purposes. Rama stated that the changes follow European Union directives and that further alignment will continue through the negotiation process with EU institutions.

He added that Albania has expanded protected areas and strengthened biodiversity management over the past decade. Rama said public attention to environmental issues reflects increased awareness of citizens’ expectations.
