PM Rama: EU membership is not just formal, it transforms Albania’s status

TIRANA, April 2 – Prime Minister Edi Rama held a discussion with young students on Albania’s EU accession process, highlighting its importance for youth.

Rama said EU membership is not a mere political formality. It represents a deep transformation of the country’s status and opportunities for citizens.

With EU membership, you become local everywhere in Europe. You pay no more than locals, access services equally, and can work across Europe as locals do. This affects each of you directly,” Rama said.

He added that following the integration process helps students understand the gap between countries inside and outside the EU. “The more you follow this process, the more you learn how far a non-EU country is,” he noted.

Rama emphasized that benefits go beyond free movement or work opportunities. Membership changes Albania’s position and its relations with other European nations. “Being part of the EU gives you access to programs, funding, and other opportunities. It is a fundamental change, not just a formal status shift,” he concluded.
