PM Rama: Foreign investment is not a threat, luxury resorts drive economic growth

TIRANA, July 2 – Prime Minister Edi Rama met pensioners in Tirana. He said foreign investment does not threaten sovereignty or territorial integrity. He said patriotism means strengthening the economy and increasing citizens’ income. He added that Albania must improve competitiveness to attract foreign capital.

Rama said rejecting foreign investment does not represent patriotism. He stressed that global competition for capital defines modern economies. He said mass tourism has promoted Albania internationally. However, he said it also pressures infrastructure, waste management and public services.

He said Albania must shift toward higher-value tourism. He called for fewer visitors and higher spending per visitor. He said this model requires stronger hospitality standards and better infrastructure.

Rama described luxury resorts as economic “factories.” He said they activate supply chains across the economy. He mentioned farmers, transport services, fishing and local production. He said each euro spent in resorts generates 1.6 to 2 euros in the wider economy.

PM said a major foreign investment of around 4 billion euro in a 27-billion-euro economy has a transformative effect. He said it encourages further investment. He warned that blocking such projects weakens competitiveness and benefits rival destinations.
