PM Rama: Protesters reflect new expectations for government standards

TIRANA, July 24 – Prime Minister Edi Rama presented his reflections on the June protests during a joint meeting of the Socialist Party parliamentary group and the government cabinet.

Rama referred to the demonstrations as the “Boulevard of Flamingos”. He said he had prepared 2 documents that would guide the fourth government mandate. One document focuses on government strategy, while the other outlines the Socialist Party’s role in supporting the process.

The prime minister addressed protesters and critical citizens. He said they should not be viewed as opponents or as ungrateful people. Instead, he described them as a measure of the standards expected from public institutions.

Rama said he had reflected on the term “ungrateful” after a mayor complained about criticism from citizens who had benefited from public investments. He said this perspective represented a challenge for a new phase of governance.

Meanwhile, Rama said the protests did not represent a rejection of Albania’s transformation. He argued that citizens were expressing higher expectations from institutions.

Those who filled the boulevards did not protest against Albania,” Rama said, referring to the demonstrations. He added that the protests reflected demands for higher standards in a country that, according to him, had changed compared with the past.

Rama said the government should consider public criticism as an opportunity to improve its work and respond to citizens’ expectations.
