TIRANA, June 9 – Prime Minister Edi Rama rejected on Monday remarks by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei, who dismissed allegations of Iranian involvement in hybrid or cyber activities in Albania.
Rama said Albanian institutions, public services and digital infrastructure were targeted by cyberattacks that international investigations have linked to actors associated with Iran. In addition, he said the attacks aimed to disrupt the functioning of a sovereign state.
He said Iran’s hostility toward Albania is not based on political slogans but on Albania’s position on freedom. Meanwhile, he referred to Albania’s decision to host Iranian opposition figures as evidence of its stance on political asylum.
Rama said Albania will continue to strengthen its cyber defence systems following previous attacks. At the same time, he said the country will not abandon people seeking protection from persecution.
He added that Albania will not become an enemy of any people, including Jews, Arabs or Americans. As a result, he said the country will remain committed to freedom, peace and openness.
