PM Rama tells pensioners pensions could rise fivefold by 2030 as economy stabilises

TIRANA, April 10 – Prime Minister Edi Rama met pensioners in Tirana’s Unit 2 to discuss economic growth, social policies, and pension reform. He said the government will continue support through annual bonuses and gradual pension increases across categories.

During the discussion, Rama said the government has entered a new phase on pensions. He recalled past constraints linked to public debt and limited fiscal space. As a result, earlier measures focused mainly on indexation rather than real increases. Now, he said, economic growth allows a different approach.

In this context, Rama outlined a multi-year plan for pension increases. He said pensions began to rise in January this year and will increase every January. The pace will accelerate each year, with higher increments planned through 2030. According to him, the goal is to significantly improve living standards for pensioners.

At the same time, he said the government will deepen pension reform. Plans include creating additional saving schemes for higher future pensions, supported by state contributions. He also pointed to upcoming changes for self-employed pensioners and those who continue working after retirement age.

Rama also addressed support for persons with disabilities. He said the current system creates unequal treatment in some cases. He stressed the need for fairer policies, especially for those who lost work capacity due to employment conditions.

He concluded that pension reform remains closely linked to economic performance. In his view, sustained growth will support long-term improvements in income security for pensioners.
