PM Rama visits new Lezha regional hospital, pledges emergency doctors’ status reform

TIRANA, April 8 – Prime Minister Edi Rama visited the new facilities of the Regional Hospital in Lezha and addressed concerns raised by doctors over inequality between specialists and emergency physicians.

He said the government will resolve the issue in June through budget changes. The plan will include emergency doctors in the specialist category and ensure higher pay. Rama stressed that emergency medicine is a distinct field with demanding responsibilities and high stress levels.

He explained that fewer doctors choose emergency roles because they are not treated as specialists. As a result, many prefer to pursue other specialisations. “If someone works on that difficult front and is treated as a general doctor, it is unfair,” Rama said, adding that the reform will correct this imbalance.

Rama also pointed to recent salary increases for medical staff. He said economic growth made these changes possible. Around 22,000 doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers now benefit from improved conditions.

He added that the government will extend salary increases further, including adjustments for experience and indexation, as part of broader efforts to strengthen the healthcare system.
