TIRANA, August 24 – Authorities released 2 million Koran fish fry into Lake Ohrid in Pogradec this weekend as part of efforts to replenish aquatic fauna and protect the endemic species. The Koran is important to the lake’s ecosystem and the local economy.
The release took place during the Koran Fish Festival, an annual event that promotes biodiversity, fishing traditions and local gastronomy. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Arjan Jaupllari said Albania released 2 million Koran fry this year. He also called for the initiative to continue. Meanwhile, he said North Macedonia should continue releasing native lake fish species to support biodiversity in the lake shared by the two countries.
According to Pogradec Municipality, local fishing representatives welcomed the initiative and said previous releases had increased Koran stocks. They also linked the increase to higher catches in recent years.
At the same time, the festival promoted Pogradec’s traditional cuisine along the lakeside promenade and at the main square. Restaurants, chefs and local residents presented dishes based on Koran, with baked Koran among the most sought-after dishes by visitors. The programme also featured musical performances and a light show.
The Koran Fish Festival aims to protect Lake Ohrid’s natural resources, preserve the Koran and promote gastronomic tourism in Pogradec.
