According to the police, scammers typically send links claiming to be related to online voting contests or requests to confirm an action. Users are then prompted to enter their six-digit WhatsApp verification code. Once obtained, the code allows fraudsters to register the victim’s account on another device and gain full access to it.

Full police advisory:

The State Police urges citizens to remain vigilant against attempts to gain unauthorized access to WhatsApp accounts.

Authorities have identified cases involving fraudulent messages and links aimed at taking control of WhatsApp accounts.

Scammers send links with various claims, such as asking users to vote in a contest or confirm an action. Victims are then asked to enter their six-digit WhatsApp verification code, which is used by the perpetrators to register the account on another device and take control of it.

The State Police advises citizens to:

  • Do not click on suspicious links, even if they are sent by someone you know;
  • Never share your WhatsApp verification code with anyone;
  • Enable Two-Step Verification in the WhatsApp app;
  • If you suspect your account has been compromised, act immediately to recover it and inform your contacts.

Protect your personal data. Staying alert is your best defence against cyber fraud.
