TIRANA, June 12 – President Bajram Begaj attended an event marking the 20th anniversary of the Adriatic-Ionian Euroregion. He praised the initiative for strengthening cooperation among countries and communities across the region.
During his address, Begaj said the anniversary reflected the value of an idea that had delivered tangible results for citizens. He described the Adriatic-Ionian Euroregion as an example of European solidarity and partnership built on trust and a shared vision.
Meanwhile, the president stressed that cooperation develops not only through political agreements. He said communities also build cooperation by addressing local needs and providing practical solutions.
According to Begaj, the initiative has strengthened ties among participating countries over the past two decades. He added that the Adriatic and Ionian area should unite peoples rather than divide them.
Later, the head of state pointed to current geopolitical tensions, economic challenges and technological change. He said modern societies increasingly depend on cooperation to achieve success. As a result, regional cooperation has become a key factor for stability, development and European integration.
In addition, Begaj said the Euroregion had helped convert European opportunities into concrete benefits for regional communities. He noted that such initiatives support Albania’s path toward European Union standards while promoting cooperation, coordination and solidarity.
At the same time, Tirana Region hosted representatives from regions in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Greece and other partner countries. Participants focused on European projects and regional partnerships. The meeting also examined cross-border initiatives and new opportunities for economic, social and cultural development across the Adriatic-Ionian area.
