President Begaj marks 70th ordination anniversary of Cardinal Ernest Simoni

TIRANA, May 4 – President Bajram Begaj attended the 70th anniversary of the priestly ordination of Cardinal Ernest Simoni at the Florence Cathedral “Santa Maria del Fiore”. He described Simoni as a symbol of resilience, faith, and sacrifice, and as a “living martyr”.

In his message, Begaj said Simoni’s life showed that no regime could destroy faith or human dignity. He added that faith is tested in difficult times and that dignity depends on personal conviction. Meanwhile, he honored the sacrifice of clergy during the dictatorship and referred to the 38 beatified Catholic martyrs.

In addition, the president said Albania today stands as a model of religious coexistence. He stressed that this harmony requires daily commitment and must be preserved and passed on to future generations. At the same time, he noted that this freedom came through sacrifice and real individuals, including Cardinal Simoni.

Earlier, Begaj addressed a message of respect to Pope Francis, who elevated Simoni to the rank of cardinal and brought his story to global attention. He said this decision recognized not only a person but also a history of endurance, hope, and faith.

Later, the president said true greatness comes from humility rather than power or fame. He referred to Albanian tradition, which values service, integrity, and perseverance. Finally, he thanked religious authorities and local officials in Florence and said the anniversary should serve as both remembrance and commitment to build a more just and peaceful society.

Begaj attended the ceremony with Albania’s ambassador to the Holy See, Majlinda Frangaj.
