TIRANA, September 2 – President Bajram Begaj received the new European Union Ambassador to Albania, Sofia Moreira de Sousa, who presented her credentials.
The president wished de Sousa success in her new role and praised the EU Delegation’s contribution to strengthening relations between Tirana and Brussels and supporting Albania’s European integration.
The meeting also covered the progress of accession negotiations and Albania’s commitment to meeting European reforms and standards. Cooperation with the EU Delegation, Begaj said, should deepen further as Albania works towards full membership in 2030.
European Union political, financial and technical support for Albania’s reforms also came under discussion. Begaj described judicial reform as a key demonstration of the country’s commitment to European standards. He reaffirmed the commitment to strengthen the independence and integrity of justice institutions and intensify the fight against corruption.
Meanwhile, the president stressed that EU membership remains a national objective with broad public support. He said the involvement of Albanian society in the process could help accelerate progress towards membership.
Albania has also fully aligned itself with the European Union’s Common Foreign and Security Policy. Begaj described this as evidence of the country’s strategic orientation and commitment to shared European values.
The president expressed confidence that de Sousa would contribute to advancing Albania-EU relations. He also said he hoped Albania would join the European Union before the end of her mandate.
