The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, announced that he will invite leaders of opposition parties to meetings in an effort to secure the necessary votes for the election of the country’s new president.
He stated that so far he has not had enough time to conduct internal consultations regarding these meetings due to a visit to Paris, France. However, he added that the meetings will take place soon. According to him, to ensure a secure presidential election process, broader support in the Assembly is required.
“I did not have sufficient time to carry out internal consultations for the upcoming meetings, but I will certainly extend invitations to the leaders of opposition parties so we can explore the possible paths to reach at least 80 votes. I emphasize that I do not believe it is ideal to have only 80 or 81 votes—we should aim for around 84 to 86 votes to be certain that we can elect the president. For this, I will send invitations and we will hold meetings, but what offers and requests will emerge from those meetings remains to be seen.”
When asked whether the candidacies of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Glauk Konjufca, and Vetëvendosje MP Fatmire Kollçaku for the presidency would be withdrawn, Kurti said: “We will see what is legally possible.”
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, called for political will to resolve the issue of the presidency. She stated that once consultations between political parties are completed, she will convene the continuation of the session to elect the head of state.
