Prof. Dr. Agron Lufi, prominent figure in Albanian architecture, dies at 79

Prof. Dr. Agron Lufi (1947–2026), a renowned architect, professor and researcher, has died at the age of 79. For more than five decades, he contributed to education, scientific research, architecture and urban planning in Albania.

The Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism and the Polytechnic University of Tirana expressed their condolences over his death. They highlighted his major role in educating generations of Albanian architects and urban planners. They also praised his contribution to contemporary architectural thought in the country.

Lufi graduated as a civil engineer from the Polytechnic University of Tirana in 1969. He then began his academic career as a teaching assistant at the Department of Architecture and Urbanism.

Over the years, he earned several academic titles, including Candidate of Sciences in Architecture, Doctor of Sciences, Associate Professor and Professor.

From 1992 to 1997, Lufi headed the Faculty of Civil Engineering. He later led the Department of Architecture and Urbanism from 2003 to 2008. He also headed the Scientific Research Center at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism.

His research focused on Albanian architectural typologies, educational and public buildings, construction technology and the protection of architectural heritage. He authored and co-authored numerous publications and scientific papers. He also supervised many doctoral and graduation theses.

Lufi also pursued further training at leading international institutions. These included the Architectural Association School of Architecture and The Bartlett School of Architecture in London, as well as architecture faculties in Florence, Turin and Rome.

Throughout his career, he contributed to the modernization of architectural education in Albania. He also promoted bioclimatic design, sustainability and energy efficiency.

Professionally, Lufi contributed to several major urban studies and projects. These included the Regulatory Plan for Tirana’s Industrial Zone, the Farkë–Sauq Regional and Environmental Study, the Urban and Tourism Study of the Lake Shkodër Shoreline, and the 2012 Regulatory Plan for the City of Tirana, which he co-authored.

Students, colleagues and collaborators will remember him for his contribution to architectural education, his professionalism and his dedication to the development of architecture and urban planning in Albania.

A memorial service for Prof. Dr. Agron Lufi will take place on October 6, 2026, from 09:00 to 12:00 at the Academy of Sciences. The funeral procession will then proceed to Tufina Cemetery.
