TIRANA, August 27 – Albania’s General Directorate of Archives has made digitization a priority in its efforts to preserve the country’s documentary heritage. The institution has also made its Study Room accessible online to the public.
Meanwhile, General Director Auron Rrokaj said the archives had created a digitization centre and would soon become operational with 100 new employees. He noted that the condition of some documents had made preservation and digitization difficult.
Since 2019, the archives have scanned more than 20 million documents. In addition, Rrokaj said the online platform had significantly increased the number of registered researchers. They can conduct research from their personal computers without visiting the Study Room in Tirana.
At the same time, the archive directorate has continued its annual publishing programme for 5 consecutive years. It is now selecting research publications for presentation in November. The programme covers important periods and figures in Albania’s history, as well as archival methodology in the Albanian-speaking region.
