Protest in Skopje: Students demand to take exams in the Albanian language

Today in Skopje, hundreds of Albanian law students in North Macedonia staged a large protest, demanding the use of their mother tongue in graduation exams—a right that exists in practice only on paper.

With chants such as “Albanian language is our right,” “We speak Albanian,” and “There is no state without youth,” the large number of students held various banners and red-and-black flags, calling for something that is already guaranteed.

Although the Albanian language has official status in North Macedonia, the bar exam—required to practice legal professions such as lawyer, judge, or prosecutor—is conducted mainly in the Macedonian language.

Students have also signed a petition on this issue, which Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski initially described as justified, but later withdrew his support, stating that “the law does not allow such a thing.”
