UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has responded to protests in Albania, Belgium, France, Italy and Portugal.

Türk condemned all acts of violence during the demonstrations and called on all parties involved to immediately ease tensions and prevent further escalation.

According to the senior UN official, the best way forward is through inclusive and safe dialogue.

“I condemn all acts of violence and call on everyone involved to de-escalate tensions and prevent further violence. The best and only way forward is through inclusive and safe dialogue,” he wrote.

“States must engage with protesters, particularly young people, in meaningful, inclusive and constructive dialogue, and take concrete steps to address legitimate and fundamental human rights concerns related to education, public services, housing, the rising cost of living and inequality,” Türk added.
