Protests in Europe and Albania, Council of Europe Secretary General reacts

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, has reacted to the wave of protests sweeping several European countries in a post on the social media platform X.

In his statement, Berset also mentioned Albania, highlighting the causes of social discontent as well as the violent incidents that have accompanied some of these demonstrations.

“From Paris to Milan, from Brussels to Tirana, protests across Europe have gone viral. Inequality. Education. Housing. Lack of prospects. A feeling of not being heard.

And amid peaceful protests, there was violence. Public buildings were attacked. Shops were looted. People were injured on all sides.

First and foremost, this hurts those who marched peacefully. Their message gets lost. Their anger belongs to them. It must not become anyone’s political tool. It deserves a response.

The temptation now will be to respond with security measures alone. This is how democratic security slides into a security-driven democracy.

Their questions are already at the heart of the New Democratic Pact for Europe,” Berset wrote.
