Quartz: Durrës tops Europe’s list of most affordable coastal destinations

Durrës has topped a list of Europe’s best-value beach destinations, according to the US media outlet “Quartz”.

The list brings together eight coastal destinations that offer travelers a combination of beaches, history, culture, gastronomy, and affordable prices.

“Quartz” highlights destinations stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean and from the Atlantic Ocean to the Adriatic. The selection also aims to provide geographical diversity rather than focusing only on Southeastern Europe.

According to the publication, travelers can find excellent value in many parts of Europe. These destinations often combine affordable accommodation and transport with historic landmarks, local cuisine, natural landscapes, and distinctive architecture.

Public transport also helps visitors reduce travel costs. Buses and trains connect beaches with nearby attractions, reducing the need to rent a car.

Durrës, Albania

Durrës combines seaside tourism with Albania’s complex 20th-century history.

The city may not offer the same dramatic coastal scenery as some destinations in southern Albania. However, its beaches, historical sites, architecture, cafés, and cultural heritage give it a distinctive appeal.

As Albania’s second-largest city and one of its still underrated international tourism destinations, Durrës offers visitors a mix of coastal relaxation and historical exploration.

Among the recommended attractions is the Royal Villa of King Zog. A concrete bunker stands nearby, creating a striking contrast between two different periods of Albania’s history.

Visitors can explore both sites to better understand the country’s political and social transformation during the 20th century.

Durrës also offers a wide range of accommodation options. The Epidamn Boutique and Spa Hotel is among the recommended choices, particularly for its traditional hammam and carefully designed interiors.

The city earns its place at the top of the list not only because of its beaches but also because it concentrates important historical landmarks within a relatively small area.

Visitors can combine sightseeing with a day at the beach. They can also enjoy fresh seafood and other local dishes at restaurants across the city.

Durrës’ position as a port city supports a strong seafood tradition, while relatively affordable prices make local dining accessible to budget-conscious travelers.

Public transport also connects Durrës with other coastal destinations. This allows visitors to explore nearby beaches and attractions without spending heavily on transportation.

The combination of affordable prices, convenient transport, beaches, history, and gastronomy makes Durrës an attractive option for travelers seeking a budget-friendly Mediterranean holiday.

Europe’s eight best-value beach destinations

  1. Durrës, Albania
  2. Neum, Bosnia and Herzegovina
  3. Larnaca, Cyprus
  4. Aberystwyth, Wales
  5. Heraklion, Crete, Greece
  6. Cádiz, Spain
  7. Liepāja, Latvia
  8. Ulcinj, Montenegro

With Durrës at the top, the ranking highlights Albania’s growing position among Europe’s affordable coastal destinations.
