Prime Minister Edi Rama said today that Albania and Italy share a long history of closeness and alliance. He also described Italy as Albania’s strongest representative of interests within the European Union.
“When I said that Italy is Albania’s European alter ego, I meant something sacred: a very long history filled with important moments, humanity, closeness and alliance. This relationship must continue,” Rama told Italian media.
Meanwhile, Rama said Albania is making progress in its EU accession negotiations. He acknowledged that the process remains challenging because the country must complete the necessary reforms and strengthen its institutions.
Asked whether he remains confident about the negotiations, Rama replied that he is “like the Neapolitans: always optimistic, never pessimistic.”
Rama is in Italy to attend the inauguration of Albania’s Honorary Consulate in Naples.
His agenda also includes a visit to the Albanian Language Chair at the University of Naples “L’Orientale.” He will also visit the University of Naples “Parthenope,” where he will attend a reception titled “Naples, a Bridge of Friendship, Cooperation and Development between Italy and Albania.”
The visit will conclude with a meeting with the rectors of Naples’ universities. Together with Minister Mirela Kumbaro, Rama will discuss opportunities to strengthen cooperation between Albanian and Italian universities and support the internationalization of higher education.
