Rama: Albania has become a small arena where global anti-Trump forces clash with Trump

Prime Minister Edi Rama said that the protests against the tourism project in Zvërnec have changed in nature and, according to him, have evolved into a political and global confrontation linked to the name of Donald Trump.

In an interview with the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, Rama said Albania has become a “small arena” where supporters and opponents of Trump are clashing, overshadowing the genuine debate on environmental protection.

“The name Trump is not simply the name of an investor in this story; it is the world’s greatest source of digital outrage. Wherever Trump appears, political, media, and digital armies, both for and against him, are automatically mobilized. Because of this project, Albania has suddenly become a small arena where global anti-Trump forces clash with Trump, while the real Albanian debate about the environment, development, and the rule of law is often drowned out by this imported noise. This does not diminish the concerns of any sincere citizen who is protesting. But it is my duty to distinguish between citizens who genuinely care about nature and the factories of hysteria that seek to use Albania as a stage for their own battles”, said Rama.

According to Rama, the government has nothing to block because there is still no final project for the Zvërnec investment. He stressed that no construction permit has been issued and that any decision will be made only after all documentation, studies, and legal and environmental standards have been thoroughly assessed.

The prime minister said he hopes the final project will become a model of development where tourism and environmental protection go hand in hand.

Rama also rejected claims that the government’s decision-making is influenced by the US administration or by the identity of the investor, saying he is neither afraid of political pressure nor of reactions on social media.
