Prime Minister Edi Rama took part on Tuesday in the Euronews 2026 Tourism Summit in Brussels. During his remarks, Rama said that the number of tourists visiting Albania continues to increase every year. He also said that Tirana International Airport has surpassed other airports in the region, including Belgrade Airport.
Rama also spoke about plans to open a seasonal airport in southern Albania, adding that efforts are underway to make Kukës Airport fully operational. Referring to investments in the country, he said the aim is to attract higher-spending, more “luxury” tourists, rather than relying solely on middle-income visitors.
“Our target is the world, because we are discovering that all parts of the world are contributing to this growth. When we began this transformative journey, we counted two million tourists, and that figure even included the officials doing the counting, because every Albanian entering and leaving the country was included in that number. My predecessor was counted as a tourist when he returned to Albania. Last year, we welcomed 12 million foreign visitors. Among them were Japanese, Americans, Latin Americans, Chinese, Israelis and visitors from the Middle East,” Rama said.
“We do not have the best infrastructure in the world. We have an airport that is among the fastest-growing in Europe. We have outpaced our neighbours for the fifth or sixth year in a row. We have surpassed Belgrade Airport. We are now going to open a new airport in Vlora, and we are working on another seasonal airport in the south. There is a fourth airport in the mountainous region, but it is not operating as we would like,” he added.
