Prime Minister Edi Rama said citizen protests can challenge the government and help improve governance and its relationship with the public.
Speaking after a government cabinet meeting in Pogradec, Rama said the recent protests over a tourism project in Zvërnec had provided a real challenge for the government. He argued that the experience could help authorities respond better to citizens’ demands.
At the same time, Rama said the government should not rely only on its past achievements. Instead, he stressed the need to keep improving public services and governance.
He also commented on the ongoing protest outside the Prime Minister’s Office, distinguishing it from the earlier citizen-led demonstrations. According to Rama, genuine civic protests can play an important role when citizens come together to demand better conditions and stronger government performance.
Moreover, Rama said Albania now has greater international support and more opportunities for development. He expressed optimism about the country’s future and urged his cabinet to remain focused on delivering further progress.
Rama also criticized the role of social media algorithms in political debates, referring to online comments about his appearance. He said such discussions often distract from the broader issues facing the country.
Overall, Rama presented citizen pressure as a potential force for better governance, while calling on the government to use the experience gained from recent challenges to improve its work for the public.
