Rama: Flamingos of Zvërnec Are a Unique Asset for Tourism Development

Prime Minister Edi Rama said the flamingos of Zvërnec represent a unique natural asset for Albania’s tourism development. He argued that nature can support investment instead of blocking it.

Furthermore, he referred to recent protests against the planned Zvërnec investment. He said such debates often misunderstand how nature and tourism can work together.

In addition, Rama compared Albania with the Bahamas. He pointed to the Baha Mar resort in Nassau as an example where nature and luxury tourism coexist successfully.

He explained that flamingos there are not seen as a problem. Instead, they are part of the destination’s identity and a key attraction for visitors from around the world.

Moreover, he said tourists travel specifically to see flamingos, take photos, and experience the natural environment. As a result, nature becomes part of the tourism economy rather than something separated from it.

He stressed that the real question is not whether tourism can coexist with nature. Instead, the focus should be how to develop tourism so that flamingos and ecosystems remain protected while also generating economic value.

Furthermore, Rama said Albania should build a model where lagoons, forests, beaches, and high-quality tourism strengthen each other. He added that tourists travel to see unique places, and Zvërnec offers exactly that uniqueness.

In addition, he noted that major international hospitality brands are part of the Zvërnec investment plans. He mentioned luxury names such as Rosewood, Cheval Blanc, Mandarin Oriental, and Atlantis Resorts.

He said this shows Albania’s ambition to position itself among top global tourism destinations. However, he stressed that Albania will not simply copy other countries, but build its own model.

Finally, Rama said Albania should not be held back by what he called outdated thinking. He emphasized that the country is moving toward becoming a leading destination in global tourism.
