Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke at the Euronews Summit 2026 about major tourism investments, projects in Sazan and Zvërnec, and the debate over economic development and nature protection.
Rama said Albania is working to attract one of Europe’s largest tourism investments in recent years. He added that a project linking Sazan Island with the Zvërnec Peninsula could reach €6 billion or more. He stressed that Albania has opened up to major investors and now offers the conditions for serious and professional cooperation.
Rama also addressed criticism and protests over the Sazan project and whether they could affect foreign investors’ perceptions of Albania. According to him, investor interest comes from the country’s economic and tourism potential rather than political considerations. He said discussions involving Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, and a major Qatari tourism company began before Trump’s political future became clear.
Rama argued that the new generation of tourism should bring economic development and nature protection together, rather than treat them as opposing goals.
“Tourism for the new generation should not result from a conflict between development and nature. Instead, it should combine development with nature.”
He also responded to criticism of planned interventions around Zvërnec and the Narta Lagoon. Rama argued that the area faces environmental problems that require regeneration and professional intervention. He said Albania plans to involve architects, engineers, hydrologists and geologists in the Sazan and Zvërnec projects. Their goal, he explained, is to create a destination where nature remains at the centre while tourism also generates strong economic benefits.
Rama added that simply leaving nature alone will not solve the area’s environmental problems. Instead, he said, the government wants to combine regeneration with tourism development and ensure that local communities and Albanians benefit from the resulting economic activity.
