Rama: “Koha Jonë” anniversary recalls era when free speech faced danger

Prime Minister Edi Rama took part in an interview marking the 35th anniversary of the newspaper “Koha Jonë” and 29 years since its burning.

The interview was conducted by publisher Nikollë Lesi.

Rama said the conversation reflects a period when free speech, as he put it, was threatened under an “ignorant regime.”

He also expressed respect for those who contributed to the newspaper’s early years and its role in Albania’s media landscape.

Moreover, Rama recalled events from 1997, including a violent attack in which he was injured. He said the period reflected deep political tension and instability.

In addition, he described his early experiences in journalism and the risks faced by media workers during the transition period.

He said “Koha Jonë” played a key role in informing the public during a time when state television dominated the media space.

Furthermore, Rama argued that the newspaper helped shape public understanding during key political moments in the 1990s.

Finally, he said media freedom carried both influence and responsibility, especially in a period of rapid democratic change.
