Prime Minister Edi Rama has stated from New York that the United States could have done more to prevent, in his view, the start of the process that led to the conviction of former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague.
During a speech at a gala evening organized by the Albanian-American Relations Council, Rama used strong language toward former U.S. President Joe Biden, saying that Thaçi had been “betrayed” by a country that, in his view, should have supported him more.
The head of the Albanian government said that his criticism was not related to Albania’s relationship with the United States, but rather to his belief that more could have been done for the four former KLA leaders, who, according to him, have been sentenced to a total of 81 years in prison by The Hague.
“Hashim Thaçi is not here with us because this country betrayed him. Joe Biden, who called him the ‘George Washington of Kosovo,’ betrayed him. Even though General Clark and some people did their best, this country did not do its best for Hashim Thaçi,” Rama said.
He added that, in his view, the United States could have acted to prevent “this farce from starting,” while thanking General Wesley Clark for his personal contribution in support of Kosovo.
