Rama: Municipalities Must Identify Historic Houses for Museum Conversion

Prime Minister Edi Rama called on mayors to draft plans to convert old houses into museums. He urged them to identify buildings with strong heritage value and save them from decay.

Speaking at a meeting with mayors, Rama said the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports has launched a process to transform historic buildings into museums.

He said the state will convert uninhabited houses that meet heritage risk criteria into museums in both cities and villages.

Rama stressed that most municipalities contain old towns or villages with valuable but abandoned houses. He said the government will take ownership through legal expropriation and turn them into museums. He added that several cases in Tirana and other areas have already entered the process.

He urged mayors to identify candidates, share them with the ministry and the Institute of Monuments, and define their cultural value and future use.

Rama said Albania must expand its tourist attractions. He noted that tourism spreads across the entire country, not just the coast or mountains.

He added that Albania should also create small thematic museums. He mentioned products such as raki, wine, and olive oil. He said visitors often ask about traditional Albanian drinks, but the country lacks dedicated museums for them.
