Prime Minister Edi Rama said that during his years in politics he may have made mistakes, but, according to him, no one can accuse him of acting against Albania’s interests.
In a video message from Mother Teresa International Airport, Rama said that various accusations may have been made against him, but, according to him, there is no evidence linked to his signature, either from his time as Mayor of Tirana or as Prime Minister.
“When an official has created a problem for themselves with the justice system, it is an individual matter between that person and the justice authorities,” Rama said.
The Prime Minister said that the fact that the justice system is investigating people in positions of power does not, in his view, show that corruption is increasing, but rather that it is being tackled.
“These episodes prove exactly the opposite. They prove that corruption is being tackled,” he said.
Rama said that one of his political commitments has been to end impunity, regardless of the power held by those facing justice.
“I promised the revival of an Albania that had been left in ruins. I pledged to put an end to impunity, regardless of power, and this is the historic change that is now taking place. I am here to make history, not to make a fortune,” Rama concluded.
