Rama Recalls 1996 Election Violence During Socialist Party Anniversary in Korça

Prime Minister and Socialist Party leader Edi Rama marked the party’s 35th anniversary in Korça on Wednesday.

In his speech, Rama reflected on May 26, 1996, and described it as a difficult moment in Albania’s democratic history. He said Socialist Party members faced violence and brutality during the parliamentary elections that year.

According to Rama, the events challenged Albania’s democratic progress and placed the opposition under strong pressure. He said many Socialist representatives and commissioners faced violence during the vote.

Rama also said the election result was unfairly taken by the ruling Democratic Party. He described the political climate of that period as harsh and deeply divided.

Rama said young people today can hardly imagine an Albania where the opposition faced regular pressure and had limited media access.

He added that the Socialist Party continued its work despite the challenges and remained committed to democracy.
