Prime Minister Edi Rama announced on Monday that 20 schools in Tirana have been equipped with smart cameras, linking the initiative to a pledge he made following the tragic killing of 14-year-old Martin Cani near his school.
In a social media post, Rama recalled the serious incident that shocked the country and said that, at the time, the existing cameras had not provided enough information to fully clarify how the incident unfolded.
“When a terrible tragedy at a school in Tirana left all of Albania holding its breath, the cameras were not able to help us enough to fully understand the dynamics of what happened,” Rama wrote.
According to the prime minister, following the incident, he pledged to bring advanced technology to Albania to improve security in educational institutions.
Rama announced that the first 20 schools in the capital have now been equipped with smart cameras, which, according to him, are capable of identifying and flagging potentially dangerous situations in real time.
The cameras have been installed in the same locations as the previous monitoring systems, but according to the prime minister, the difference lies in the capabilities of the new technology.
“Unlike the old ones, they monitor and alert school administrators, security personnel, or even the State Police in real time,” Rama said, adding that the system is intended to enable a faster response to potentially dangerous situations.
The prime minister stressed that the 20 schools in Tirana represent only the first phase of the project and that the installation of this technology will gradually continue in other schools across the country.
“We will turn the pledge made after that tragedy into reality, school by school, with technology serving people and children’s safety above everything else,” Rama concluded.

These cameras have been and will continue to be installed in the same locations as the old ones. But unlike the old cameras, they monitor and alert school administrators, security personnel, or even the State Police in real time, helping them quickly detect warning signs, better understand what is happening, and intervene without wasting time.
These 20 schools are only the first step in the process. We will turn the pledge made after that tragedy into reality, school by school, with technology serving people and children’s safety above everything else.”
