Prime Minister Edi Rama said that Sazan Island will remain property of the Albanian state. He stressed that it will not be privatized.
Speaking at the Socialist Party’s 35th anniversary event in Vlora, Rama said Sazan is a national asset. Therefore, any development project will be carried out in partnership with the state.
“Sazan belongs to the Albanian people and the Albanian state. Moreover, the state will be a partner in its development,” Rama said.
He added that negotiations for strategic investments have been conducted through institutional and transparent procedures.
Furthermore, Rama rejected claims that the island is being sold. He said previous leaders also wanted to turn Sazan into a tourist destination. However, he stressed that his government is not offering the island for privatization.
In addition, Rama said the model used for strategic investments does not involve selling public assets. He noted that the “Albania for 1 Euro” law existed before his government.
Rama also addressed debates on immigration and employment. He argued that foreign workers are not taking jobs from Albanians.
“Some say Indians and Pakistanis will take jobs in hotels and restaurants. However, those making these claims are not seeking those jobs themselves,” he said.
Meanwhile, Rama highlighted rising wages in the tourism sector. He said salaries in restaurants in Vlora are now equal to or higher than those in Greece.
Finally, Rama spoke about property rights issues in Albania. He argued that problems began long before he became leader of the Socialist Party. According to him, ownership documents were mishandled during the early 1990s, creating long-term disputes over property.
