Prime Minister Edi Rama told Socialist Party leaders and parliamentary committee chairs that the party derives its mandate from the people’s vote and has a duty to fulfill its commitments.
During the meeting, Rama presented “Loyal Presence,” a new document that complements the previously introduced “Besa” platform. He urged the Socialist Party to learn from successful long-governing parties around the world, embrace innovation and avoid past mistakes.
Addressing questions about the party’s long time in office, Rama drew a distinction between remaining in power today and earning the right to continue governing tomorrow.
“Democracy does not allow a political party to inherit power, own it, or abandon it simply because others want to take control,” Rama said. He stressed that the Socialist Party governs under the Constitution and continues to exercise authority as long as voters grant it a mandate and it retains parliamentary support.
Furthermore, Rama rejected claims by political opponents that they alone represent the people. He argued that no individual or group can claim to embody the entire population and noted that only elections can determine who governs and who remains in opposition.
Rama also emphasized that citizens express their sovereign will through the ballot box. Therefore, he said, only voters can decide who receives the mandate to govern the country.
At the same time, he stated that a government should not resign simply because a minority demands it through protests. He argued that abandoning office under such pressure would mean neglecting responsibilities entrusted by the majority of voters.
According to Rama, leadership requires commitment to institutional responsibilities and the completion of long-term national objectives. Consequently, he reaffirmed that the government will continue its work while respecting the democratic process and the will of the electorate.
