Research funding tripled as Albania aligns reforms with European Union directives

TIRANA, April 29 – Following the Thursday’s government meeting, Minister of Education Mirela Kumbaro presented the latest decisions at a press conference.
She said European Union integration remains a key priority for Albania. In this context, she announced that the budget for scientific research has tripled.

Kumbaro stated that the government has approved the twelfth secondary act under the law on science in the Republic of Albania for 2024. She described it as an important package for organising research institutions in line with European Commission and European Union directives.

She said this step represents the final legal measure for Chapter 25, which covers scientific research. She added that this chapter is expected to close among the first within this year in the framework of negotiations with the European Union.

Meanwhile, Kumbaro explained that the government prepared the legal acts in close cooperation with Albanian institutions and the European Commission. She said this cooperation ensures full alignment and supports Albania’s participation in the European Research Area.

She also said the process opens new opportunities for researchers. It provides facilitations for scientists in universities and both public and private institutions. It also places them on equal terms with colleagues in European Union member states.
