Restoration project for Saint Nicholas Church in Upper Krutja, Lushnja

TIRANA, July 22 – The National Institute of Cultural Heritage (IKTK) has presented a restoration project for Saint Nicholas Church, a Category I Cultural Monument located in Upper Krutja, Lushnja.

IKTK representatives held a working meeting at the Lushnja Municipality, where they discussed planned interventions for the protection, consolidation and restoration of the historic monument. The institution is also carrying out documentation, studies and procedures required for the project’s implementation.

The representatives highlighted the importance of Saint Nicholas Church for the cultural heritage and historical identity of the area. They stressed that the restoration process requires close cooperation between institutions and the local community.

Meanwhile, the meeting reaffirmed the commitment to preserving the monument and ensuring that this valuable part of Albania’s cultural heritage remains protected for future generations.

Built in the 18th century on earlier foundations, Saint Nicholas Church represents one of the important cultural heritage sites in the Myzeqe region. The church features elements of Orthodox religious architecture, while its frescoes and iconostasis provide valuable evidence of Albanian ecclesiastical art history.

Today, the church attracts visitors interested in cultural and religious tourism, offering insight into the spiritual heritage, local history and cultural identity of Lushnja.
