Former DP MP Ervin Salianji has reacted to the latest developments in the race for the leadership of the Democratic Party, expressing criticism over how the party is being managed under Sali Berisha.
In a Facebook post, Salianji writes that Berisha shows a lack of responsibility, which could lead to division.
“The miserable standard with which Berisha is treating the Democratic Party reflects a deep lack of historical responsibility toward the sacrifices of democrats who have been languishing in opposition for 13 years.
The display of this statesman, now degraded completely with divisions, foolishness, imaginary friends and enemies… with lies and vile falsehoods that have left democrats wandering for 13 years, shows the loss of the last ‘fortress’ he had managed to conceal: manhood.
He and the circle clinging to him abuse the loyalty and values of democrats, placing them under moral pressure: to remain silent ‘out of respect for age,’ to stay silent because of ‘favors received,’ to stay silent as the DP fades away due to its attachment to him.
Who bears responsibility for the deepest loss since 1997, on May 11, 2025? Who made the lists? Who drafted the banal program as if it were 1995? Who led the campaign?
And the most important question: how will the Democratic Party win?
Even the most loyal democrats know that with Sali Berisha and this leadership, victory will never come.
Every day he remains at the head of the Democratic Party of Albania is a loss for the opposition and for Albania.
Time works only for change. Sali Berisha can never represent it.
He is worn out, isolated, under investigation, incapable of uniting the opposition.
We cannot speak of change in Albania while refusing change within the DP. We cannot ask for the votes of Albanians like this.
The Democratic Party can never be strong without competition, without representation, without accountability.
Every attempt to avoid these weakens the Democratic Party and distances it from citizens.
The Democratic Party cannot be a party of one individual—it does not deserve to be! It must return to being a party of the masses and of power. It belongs to the democrats and is the hope of thousands of Albanians who have awaited political rotation for years.
The DP does not deserve to disappear because of its leader.
They have miscalculated, especially with me and the majority of democrats.
The time calls on democrats not to remain silent,” Salianji writes.
