On September 1, 1912, Shkodra opened Albania’s first public cinema, known as the “Grand-Kino Skioptiko-Electric Theatre.”
Austrian entrepreneur Jozef Shtauber launched the initiative. Meanwhile, renowned Shkodra painter Kolë Idromeno supported the project and offered space in his home for the screenings.
The cinema continued showing films until 1914. However, the outbreak of World War I brought its activities to an end.
The opening marked an important milestone in the history of Albanian cinema. It also introduced public film screenings to Albania at a key moment in the country’s early cultural development.
