Speaker Peleshi in Lithuania: Support reaffirmed for Albania’s European Union path and 2027 NATO summit bid

TIRANA, June 4 – Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi concluded a parliamentary diplomacy tour of the Baltic states with an official visit to Lithuania, where officials reaffirmed support for Albania’s European Union membership process and its bid to host a North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in 2027.

During meetings with Lithuanian Parliament Speaker Juozas Olekas and Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė, discussions focused on Albania’s accession negotiations, European security, cooperation within NATO and bilateral ties in areas including cyber defence and tourism. Peleshi thanked Lithuania for its continued support for Albania’s European integration and highlighted Albania’s contribution to regional and Euro-Atlantic security, including the deployment of troops in the Baltic region. He also reiterated Albania’s support for Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Olekas said European Union enlargement, security and competitiveness would rank among the priorities of Lithuania’s European Union presidency in January-June 2027. He reaffirmed Lithuania’s support for Albania’s membership process and praised the country’s progress based on merit and concrete results. In addition, he welcomed Albania’s contribution to regional stability and confirmed Lithuania’s support for holding a NATO summit in Tirana in 2027.

At the same time, Peleshi told Prime Minister Ruginienė that Albania had entered a decisive stage in its European integration process following developments at the Albania-European Union Intergovernmental Conference on May 26. Ruginienė praised Albania’s progress and said enlargement would remain a priority during Lithuania’s presidency of the European Union. She added that enlargement contributes to Europe’s security, unity and prosperity.

Later, Peleshi met members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Western Balkans. Participants discussed parliamentary cooperation and the region’s European perspective. They described Western Balkans integration as a strategic investment in peace, stability and security across Europe.
