TIRANA, July 24 – Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi presented the work of the legislature during its first 2 sessions. He said the current parliamentary term has focused strongly on Albania’s European integration process.
During an expanded meeting of the Socialist Party parliamentary group, attended by Prime Minister and Socialist Party leader Edi Rama, Peleshi reviewed parliament’s constitutional functions. He said the institution carried out its legislative, oversight and electoral responsibilities.
Peleshi said parliament served as a key institution for implementing major reforms during this period. He reported that lawmakers approved 131 laws in the first 2 sessions. The figure represents around 40 more laws than during the first 2 sessions of the previous legislature.
Meanwhile, parliament approved changes to its Rules of Procedure through consensus. According to Peleshi, the changes modernised parliamentary procedures and reorganised permanent parliamentary committees.
The speaker also highlighted legal reforms in several areas. These included amendments to the Criminal Code and Civil Code, conflict of interest rules, lobbying regulations, investigative committees, justice institutions, intellectual property, environmental protection, agriculture and rural development.
Regarding European integration, Peleshi said parliament’s work has become closely connected with Albania’s European Union membership negotiations. He added that lawmakers approved 157 additional amendments, reviewed negotiating positions and monitored the progress of negotiations.
In addition, parliament held dozens of hearings with ministers and negotiating teams during the process.
