Albanian Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi said direct engagement with citizens and communities in EU member states is essential for the success of Albania’s EU integration process. He made the remarks at a conference with representatives of Albanian institutions and the European Parliament.
Peleshi said enlargement cannot rely only on political institutions. He stressed the need for direct communication with citizens and stronger parliamentary diplomacy. He also said public support in EU member states will directly affect the ratification of future accessions.
Meanwhile, Peleshi described the conference as part of an intensive period of European activities in the Albanian Parliament. He cited recent initiatives, including a forum at the European Parliament, the 22nd meeting of the Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee and dialogue with ambassadors from eight Western Balkan countries.
Peleshi said Albania has received encouraging support for the enlargement process. However, he called for further joint efforts to strengthen public support for enlargement across EU member states. He said communication with citizens and stronger links between communities should remain part of efforts to make enlargement a project understood and supported by the European public.
