Albanian Special Olympics swimmers represented Albania for the first time at the “Malta Open 2026.” They delivered an impressive performance and returned home with one gold and two silver medals.
Iris Hoxha won first place in the 100-meter freestyle.
Gersi Troka finished second in the 50-meter butterfly.
Joel Gërmënji took second place in the 50-meter freestyle.
For Iris Hoxha and Joel Gërmënji, the competition also marked their first international swimming event. Their results therefore made the achievement even more significant.
The Albanian team included four athletes: Gersi Troka, Iris Hoxha, Joel Gërmënji and Alisa Boçi. Coach Gentian Lama and National Director of Special Olympics Albania Sara Bala Muça accompanied the team.
Beyond the medals, Albania’s participation in the “Malta Open 2026” highlights the continued development of inclusive sports in the country. It also shows how sport can create opportunities for athletes to compete, represent their country and reach their full potential.
Meanwhile, continued support and greater opportunities for inclusive sports remain important priorities for the development of Albanian sport.
