State Central Archive established 77 years ago

TIRANA, June 8 – Albania established the State Central Archive on June 8, 1949, creating a key institution for preserving national memory.

The government issued the founding decree on that date, and the institution initially operated under the Institute of Sciences in Tirana. Meanwhile, officials prepared internal regulations, which helped launch the national archival network in legal and practical terms. Earlier, a 1932 law had already foreseen a General State Archive, although authorities never implemented it.

In 1951, the Ministry of Internal Affairs took control of the State Central Archive. Later, in 1962, the Council of Ministers established the General Directorate of Archives. As a result, the system expanded into 15 institutions, including the central archive, 12 regional archives and two system archives.

Today, the network preserves more than 200 million documents, including material dating back to the 6th century. In addition, the Directorate of Archives continues to expand its holdings through annual transfers from state institutions and donations from figures in national history.
