State Minister for Local Government: Strong local communities build Europe

TIRANA, June 12 – State Minister for Local Government Ervin Demo highlighted the importance of territorial cooperation and strong local government during an event marking the 20th anniversary of the Adriatic-Ionian Euroregion.

During his remarks, Demo praised the Euroregion’s role in bringing together countries, institutions and citizens over the past two decades. He described the initiative as a successful example of territorial cooperation.

Meanwhile, the minister said the anniversary offered an opportunity to assess achievements and discuss the region’s future. According to Demo, cooperation remains one of the most effective tools for creating a more connected, competitive and sustainable region.

Later, he turned to Albania’s European integration process. Demo stressed that Europe does not grow only through central institutions. He argued that local authorities play a key role because citizens receive services and experience public policies at the local level.

In addition, the minister said Albania has launched new reforms to strengthen local government. The reforms focus on expanding professional capacities, establishing an academy for local government needs and increasing the financial autonomy of municipalities.

At the same time, Demo said stronger local authorities can respond more effectively to community demands and support long-term development policies.
The minister also described municipalities as the institutions closest to citizens. He noted that local authorities address daily concerns and expectations across communities.

As a result, Demo said investment in local government directly improves citizens’ quality of life. He added that such investment also supports Albania’s path toward European integration.

Finally, the minister said Albania aims to integrate its local authorities into European networks and mechanisms before the country’s full membership in the European Union.
