“Style Magazine”: Berat blends history, adventure and exceptional wines

Berat offers travelers a rare mix of history, adventure, gastronomy and hospitality. Pier Andrea Canei highlights the city in Italy’s “Style Magazine”. He presents Berat as an increasingly popular destination for international travelers.

The UNESCO-listed city combines its historic “thousand windows” with the medieval Berat Castle, the Osum Canyon and vineyards across the surrounding hills.

Visitors can explore the area through rafting, mountain biking, trekking and off-road tours. They can also discover local cuisine and wine at guesthouses and wineries.

Explore Berat Castle

Travelers can climb to Berat Castle for panoramic views of the city. The UNESCO-listed fortress features narrow streets, mosques and Orthodox churches.

The Church of the Dormition of Saint Mary houses the Onufri Museum. The museum displays works by Onufri, one of Albania’s most important icon painters.

Visitors can also stay at Villa Sophie, a distinctive hotel near the castle.

Adventure in the Osum Canyon

Berat also serves as a base for outdoor adventures. The Osum Canyon lies about 90 minutes away by car. The river cuts through dramatic rock walls and passes waterfalls and emerald-colored waters.

Visitors can go river trekking in summer. Rafting becomes a popular activity in autumn. Local guides and operators such as Flow Albania help visitors organize these experiences.

Walk along Republika Boulevard

Republika Boulevard forms one of Berat’s liveliest pedestrian areas.Visitors can enjoy the traditional evening stroll beneath the plane trees. Cafés gradually turn into relaxed spots for evening drinks.

A stop at Shtepia e Kafes Gimi offers Turkish coffee, local wine, cheese and olives. The boulevard also gives visitors a chance to experience the city’s mix of history and modern life.

Discover Berat’s wine culture

The hills around Malinat and Malas Breg produce some of the region’s best-known wines. Local vineyards grow indigenous grape varieties such as Puls and Sheshi i Bardhë.

The Çobo winery welcomes visitors for vineyard tours and wine tastings. Guests can learn how the area’s microclimate shapes the wine. Among the recommended wines is the red Kashmer.

Experience traditional hospitality

Mangalem preserves the historic character of Berat’s “thousand windows”.

Traditional guesthouses offer visitors a closer look at local life. Bujtina Kodiket Guesthouse serves homemade breakfasts with fresh fruit and eggs, as well as revani with honey and walnuts.

Visitors can then walk across the historic Gorica Bridge and explore the Christian quarter. For dinner, Ajka offers a terrace with views of the surrounding area.

Add Tirana to the trip

Travelers can also spend an evening in Tirana before or after visiting Berat. The itinerary can include Skanderbeg Square, the National Historical Museum and Bunk’Art.

Visitors can then explore Tirana Castle for handicrafts and traditional products. Shendeverë, a wine bar connected to Berat’s wine culture, offers another option for dinner.

For travelers with more time, the coast is also within reach. Durrës lies about an hour away by car and offers beach destinations such as Melissa.

Berat brings together history, nature, adventure, wine and gastronomy in one destination. This combination continues to strengthen the city’s appeal among international travelers.
