Summer season: Albania to restrict truck traffic from June 19

TIRANA, June 17 – The State Police announced new traffic restrictions for heavy vehicles during the 2026 summer season. Authorities based the measure on Joint Instruction No. 106 of June 14, 2024, issued by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy and the Ministry of Interior.

The restrictions will remain in force from June 19 to September 15, 2026. They will apply on weekends and public holidays to freight vehicles with a maximum authorised mass above 7.5 tonnes, as well as other categories specified in the instruction.

Under the measure, authorities will ban circulation on Fridays from 15:00 to 24:00. The ban will also apply on Saturdays from 07:00 to 24:00 and on Sundays from 07:00 to 24:00.

Meanwhile, public holiday restrictions will start at 15:00 on the preceding day and continue until 22:00. Authorities will then apply a second restriction period from 07:00 to 24:00 on the holiday itself.

The measure will cover motorways, interurban roads and routes linking coastal and tourist areas. These roads record heavy traffic flows during the summer season.

However, authorities will exempt emergency vehicles, State Police vehicles and vehicles belonging to other state institutions. The exemption will also cover vehicles transporting essential goods, including perishable food products.

In addition, competent authorities may issue special permits in urgent and exceptional cases.

The State Police urged transport operators and drivers to comply with the restrictions. According to the announcement, the measure aims to improve road safety, ease traffic congestion and support a safe tourism season.
