Tax Authorities Audit High-Income Individuals, Identify €770,000 in Suspicious Findings

Around 200 high-income individuals in Albania are being audited as part of an intensified effort by the tax authorities to verify their wealth and income. The General Directorate of Taxes says it has identified €770,000 in suspicious findingsso far.

The Tax Administration has stepped up inspections targeting individuals with significant wealth and high incomes, who are considered at greater risk of underreporting income and failing to meet their tax obligations.

According to data published by the General Directorate of Taxes, 129 individuals were audited between 2025 and June 30, 2026.

The audits uncovered irregularities with a total value of €770,000. Meanwhile, 144 new audits were launched during 2026 alone and are currently at various stages of the audit process.

The Tax Administration aims to complete 200 audits of high-net-worth individuals by December 31, 2026. The inspections focus on cases where discrepancies are identified between an individual’s assets, spending, and declared income.

This marks the first time the Albanian tax authorities have specifically targeted high-income individuals through such a nationwide audit initiative. The General Directorate of Taxes emphasized that it continues to implement reforms aimed at creating a more modern, efficient tax administration aligned with European Union standards.
