The Albanian Parliament’s plenary session resumed amid tensions after opposition MPs lit flares inside the chamber, blocked the parliamentary rostrum and blew whistles.
Following the disruption, Speaker of Parliament Niko Peleshi decided to expel four opposition MPs from the plenary session: Xhelal Mziu, Bledi Himçi, Ivi Kaso and Bledion Nallbati.
Tensions also escalated during Thursday’s plenary session when Speaker Niko Peleshi barred Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha from speaking for the remainder of the session, arguing that he had incited violence from the parliamentary rostrum.
The decision followed remarks by Berisha, who, referring to the violence used against students during protests, said that the same violence should be used against Socialist Party MPs.
Peleshi described Berisha’s statement as an incitement to violence and decided to revoke his speaking rights for the remainder of Thursday’s session.
