The Goddess of Butrint Returns to the Place Where It Was Discovered

The Goddess of Butrint, one of Albania’s best-known archaeological heritage works, has returned to the place where archaeologists discovered it, the ancient city of Butrint.

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports Blendi Gonxhja announced the return after the statue travelled from Butrint to Rome and later to the National Historical Museum in Tirana.

“The Goddess of Butrint returns home,” Gonxhja said, describing the return as an important event for Albania’s cultural heritage.

According to Gonxhja, the statue’s return enriches Butrint’s historical narrative. It also gives visitors the opportunity to see up close an important testimony to the history, art and shared European heritage.

Meanwhile, Gonxhja said Butrint has welcomed more than 200,000 visitors this year. The ancient city continues to strengthen its position as one of Albania’s leading cultural tourism destinations.

“I thank the entire team that worked on the Goddess’s return to Butrint. I also express our deep gratitude to AADF and reaffirm our support for successful models like this one, which we can now see through the Butrint Management Foundation,” Gonxhja said.

The return further strengthens Butrint’s role as a major cultural heritage site and connects its archaeological treasures more closely with visitors.
